Early Mesoamerican Cultures

The ancient cultures in America developed urban centers foe religious ceremonials and sacrifices creating a theocratic environment. Three cultures of ancient Mexico : Teotihuacanos, Zapotecs and Mayans showed great architectural articulation. The ceremonial platform center in Olmec now called San Lorenzo was an immense earthwork. In La Venta, east of San Lorenzo, ceremonial precincts were decorated with giant stone heads and thrones. The earthworks sat on square base with a precise geometric pattern consisting of mud bricks which would later turn into mounds. These compositional structures were raised terraces with an axial alignment on orthogonal elements which were raised with layer on them unlike the system in China where they were rebuilding their structures. The layering system showed a symbol for renewal.
